Electric tape is not "soldering"

We want to use light for giving instructions, not as a simple feedback. However, everything we said about people following the light and understanding how the system works were assumptions. To understand how people would really react to a floor that lights up, tries to guide you, we decided to test it on people. We started building 3 or 4 floor tiles so that we can start testing.

After some trials and errors, we managed to create 3 tiles that we can control with switches. However we could not manage to create a nice tile with proper lighting until we discovered christmas lights with their LEDs already connected to eachother and built-in switches.

We managed to make one tile control sound and music when pressure is applied. Now, we are going to produce more to test the relationship between the users and the interactive floor: How the floor interacts with one user or more and what kind of an interaction it is.

The Corridor

Jumping DJ

Jumping DJ is a concept where users create their own music by interacting with special surfaces on the floor. There may be three different ways they interact with these surfaces: They step on them to play a single tune, they step on them to start/stop a loop or they may stand on them to keep the music playing.

The first video shows a person playing the game by herself. It actually shows how I could not wait for others to arrive to test the concept! The second one shows how 3 people can interact with it at the same time.

This week we started on one of the major projects. We will be designing a public installation for the House of Popular Music which will be opened in 2010 in Oslo.

The installation will be in one of the two rooms of the center. Installations for the Research Park aim "to give visitors an opportunity to experience and explore the physical nature of sound and how it affects human chemistry, physchology, social behaviour and out whole culture." We can also choose to design an installation for the Children's Playroom which aims "to create an engaging, safe and exciting environment in which children can explore, play and learn about music."

Paper Plane - engaging for everyone?

Here is the presentation video for our Wii Fit game - Paper Plane. Even though the animations doesn't show the smooth flight experience, we tried to visualize the calm and smooth environment of the game. Yes, the music actually belongs to a Nintendo DS game and we could not decide what the guy says in the end of the video. "The world you wish for.. Nintendo DS.. 'something something' for everyone!"

This week, in groups of two, we have been working on an engaging concept developed for Wii Balance Board. Ane and I, designed a paper plane game where users control the movement of a paper plane by Wii Balance Board. It is a simple concept. You fly the plane as much as you can by collecting wind power from friendly clouds and avoiding the thunder storms.

We decided working on the 'mood cup'. As the main focus of this week's task is the physical objects, we started building the cups and the table right away. Here are some photos from the prototyping process. We created cups that have plain faces on them and this way, they are customizable. Users can customize the cups according to their mood.

This week, we have the project "playful RFID using Tikitag". We are working in groups of two and Ruben and I sketched out 10 different playful interactions that can be created with a tikitag starter pack.

Earthquake Detector

Another Arduino day.. I've managed to switch on and off an LED, a buzzer and a motor. I used one of the switches I made last week in Matt Cottam's workshop. When the table moves, the switch is on and the Arduino code starts the LED, the motor and the buzzer, to warn you about the earthquake!

We are going to have a one-week physical computation workshop with Einar S. Martinussen. The first day of the workshop was more about getting to know Arduino which is "an open-source electronics prototyping platform" according to its website, arduino.cc. We also made our first Arduino project, an LED blinking every other second. Here's the code;

The Nobel Chamber is a permanent exhibition in Nobel Peace Center (Nobels Fredssenter). It is a magical book - as described in the museum guide- about Alfred Nobel's life, inventions and testament.

Stem med støvelen!

“Stem med støvelen” is an installation which takes part in the exhibition Klima X which opened in December 2007 in the Norsk Teknisk Museum. It has been conceptualized and created by Codesign. The exhibition aims to call people’s attention towards global warming and inform them about the causes, effects and remedies. “Stem med støvelen” aims to make people think about and express their opinion in some controversial issues like the oil production of Norway. It consists of seven pads and a screen. The visitors see a statement in the screen and using their foot, they step on the red or the green foot image on the pad, red representing against the idea and green representing pro. When the time given for answering is up, they see the result of that particular session which consists of seven answers as well as the overall result for everyone who visited the exhibition. They step on the sensor and they step up their opinion.
